A chemical peel is done with actual chemicals. It's extremely abrasive, which is why it's done in a clinical setting. It needs a neutralizer to be put on to "turn off" the chemicals and to keep them from burning your face off. The problem with this is that the neutralizer can be put on to soon (not getting all the skin you wanted off) or to late, which often results in burns and major damage. I've heard some gory details to say the least.
No matter when the neutralizer is put on your still going to have to go straight home and stay there for awhile. Skin actually sloths off for at least a day and the new skin exposed is more susceptible to infection.
Chemical peels are also extremely expensive. Usually about $100 a piece. Often the dermatologist wants you to come in for about 3 painful treatments.
